Town to hold election information session Friday for prospective candidates

Those interested in running for mayor, councillor, school board trustee positions encouraged to attend

Those interested in running in the upcoming 2022 Town of Caledon municipal and school board elections are encouraged to attend an information session being held by the Town.

t will be held on Friday, April 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Caledon's Town Hall in the Council Chamber (6311 Old Church Road) in Caledon East.

It will also be live-streamed on the Town's website.

Third-party advertisers, those outside of a candidate's campaign who express support or opposition to a candidate, are also encouraged to attend the information session.

“The Town's information session, hosted in partnership with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, will provide a better understanding of what is required of potential candidates and third-party advertisers if they choose to file their nomination in the 2022 Municipal and School Board Election,” said Laura Hall, Town Clerk and Returning Officer for the 2022 Municipal and School Board Election in a media release. “We invite and encourage anyone interested in learning more to register and join us.”

The candidate nomination period for Caledon's 2022 elections opens May 2 and closes on August 19 at 2 p.m., while third-party advertiser registration opens the same day and closes on October 21.

Voting day is October 24, though advance voting options will be made available to Caledon residents.

Friday's information session will cover important requirements such as eligibility, the nomination and registration process, campaign finances and compliance audits, and the voters list.

In Caledon's 2022 municipal election, a Mayor will be elected as usual. Two Regional Councillors will be elected, one to represent wards one to three, and one to represent wards four to six.

Currently, the Town of Caledon has four regional councillors at Region of Peel Council — one for Ward One, One for Ward Two, one for Wards Three and Four, and one for Ward Five. 

Six Town of Caledon councillors will be elected, one for each of Caledon's six wards. Trustees for the Peel and Dufferin-Peel Catholic district school boards will also be elected. Nominations for Trustee of Conseil scolaire de Viamonde are accepted at the City of Mississauga, while nominations for Trustee of Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir are accepted at the City of Brampton.

In order to be nominated, a candidate must gather 25 signatures from eligible Caledon electors supporting their nomination. Filing a nomination will cost a candidate $100, unless they are running for mayor, which will cost them $200.

According to the Town of Caledon, “candidates are strongly encouraged to book an appointment with the Town clerk to file their nomination form”; and, “no person who proposes to be a candidate may solicit or accept contributions for election purposes or incur campaign expenses until they have filed a nomination paper.”
