Town of Caledon, ecoCaledon to host event for Earth HourEvent to run from 6 to 10 p.m. on March 22 at the Caledon East Community Complex By ZACHARY ROMAN Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Residents looking to mark Earth Hour can do so this year at a new event. From 6 to 10 p.m. on March 22, the Town of Caledon and local non-profit ecoCaledon are partnering to host Caledon's first-ever Earth Hour event at the Caledon East Community Complex. Lucrezia Chiappetta, co-chair of ecoCaledon, said she's been hoping for a Caledon Earth Hour event for a number of years, and is very excited to finally have one planned. “For anybody who doesn't know, Earth Hour is a global initiative that's taken place since 2007 and it's always kind of been known as the ‘lights off movement' where people shut off all unnecessary lights and anything that's plugged in between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.,” said Chiappetta. “The last several years, the whole initiative has tried to shift a little bit… you know, we're not just shutting off the lights, but we're also encouraging people to give an hour for the planet.” The event will feature vendors, activities, and refreshments all focused on sustainability. Chiappetta said many people celebrate Earth Day, but Earth Hour is a little less well-known. “It's an opportunity for us to get more residents out, celebrate our commitment to the planet, have a great time, learn something and do something good,” she said. |
