Town and Region release what councillors were paidBy Bill Rea It's not bad work if you can get it. The hours can be long, there's plenty of public scrutiny and the job holders have seek permission of the electorate to stay in the position every four years. But the money is pretty good too. Both the Town of Caledon and Region of Peel have released their reports on what the respective bodies paid to municipal councillors in 2014. Not surprisingly, former mayor Marolyn Morrison made the most, as far as Caledon's representation was concerned. All things, considered, she made more than $146,000 for the roughly 11 months she was on the job (Morrison did not run in last fall's election). Factoring in their whole packages, both Mayor Allan Thompson and the late Richard Whitehead were above the $100,000 mark. Whitehead was defeated in his bid for re-election in the fall, as well former Regional councillors Richard Paterak and Patti Foley. Both Paterak and Foley fell short of the $100,000 level. Morrison was paid a salary of 60,360 for the time she was in office at the Town. In addition to that, she received $2,637.73 to cover statutory benefit costs, $3,654.84 in pension costs, $4,137.88 in other benefit costs, $11,897.72 in expenses and $4,921.35 in mileage, for a total package from the Town of $87,609.52. On top of that, the Region paid her a salary of $49,828.98, along with $9,055.62 in benefits and $462.54 to cover conferences and other expenses. Her total remuneration came to $146,956.66. Thompson was paid a salary by the Town, including an increase during the last month, after he had been sworn in as mayor. His total salary was $31,734.80, along with $1,297.73 in statutory benefits, 1,921.59 in pension costs, $4,280.99 in other benefits, $5,999.08 in expenses, $6,788.83 in mileage, $75 in other remuneration and $18.40 in other expenses for a total of $52,116.42 from the Town. His Regional package included a salary of $54,472.61 and $9,791 in benefits. As well, Thompson received $583.84 for representing the Region on Credit Valley Conservation and $174.72 in expenses. His total package amounted to $117,138.59. Paterak received a salary of $26,704.80 from the Town, as well as $348.39 in benefits, $1,616.89 in pension costs, $3,900.06 in other benefits, $1,434.58 in expenses and $4,161.45 in mileage for a total of $38,166.17 from the Town. His Regional package included $49,828.98 in salary, $6,458.21 in benefits and $3,977.90 for conferences and other expenses, for a grand total of $98,431.26. Whitehead received $26,704.80 in salary from the Town, along with $348.39 in statutory benefits, $3,900.06 in other benefits, $5,640.77 in expenses and $3,800.46 in mileage for a total of $40,394.48 from the Town. His package from the Region included $49,828.98 in salary, $1,995.36 in benefits and $6,931.21 in conferences and other expenses. In addition, Whitehead received $1,645.78 for representing the Region on Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and $935 in other expenses. The grand total of his remuneration came to $101,730.81. Foley's salary from the Town came to $26,704.80, plus $1,077.85 in statutory benefits, $1,616.89 in pension costs, $3,900.06 in other benefits, $2,506 in expenses and $1,556 in mileage for a total of $37,361.60 from the Town. Her Regional stipend came to $49,828.98 in salary, $1,945.34 in benefits and $40 for conferences and other expenses, making her total package come out at $89,175.92. As far as the area councillors were concerned, the four of them were paid salaries of $28,930.20 (all four were successful in their re-election bids). In addition, Doug Beffort received $377.42 in statutory benefits, $1,751.69 in pension benefits, $4,260.37 in other benefits, $4,012.88 in expenses and $2,562.72 in mileage, for a total package of $41,895.29. Gord McClure's package included $1,167.70 in statutory benefits, $1,751.69 in pension costs, $1,829.37 in other benefits, $3,193.14 in expenses and $5,072.63 in mileage for a total of $41,944.73. On top of his salary, Nick deBoer received $1,167.70 in statutory benefits, $1,751.69 in pension costs, $4,260.37 and in other benefits, $1,093.17 in expenses. The total for him came to $37,203.13. The package received by Rob Mezzapelli included $1,167.70 in statutory benefits, $1,751.69 in pension costs, $4,260.37 in other benefits, $2,890.02 in expenses and $2,252.25 in mileage for a total of $41,252.23. The four new Regional councillors each received $2,225.40 in salary for the one month they were on the job, as well as $89.85 in statutory benefits, $134.80 in pension costs and $360.31 in other benefits. Barb Shaughnessy received $265.46 for mileage and Jennifer Innis got $11.48. The four of them also received $4,643.63 in salaries from the Region, and $733.85 in benefits. Annette Groves also got $45.37 for conferences and expenses. |
