Tilson signs book of condolence for MandelaDufferin-Caledon MP David Tilson was among those signing a book of condolence in Ottawa this week on behalf of his constituents, in honour of former South African president Nelson Mandela. Mr. Mandela died last week after a lengthy illness. He was 95. “Nelson Mandela was a towering figure for justice and equality in the world,” Tilson said. “His tireless march to freedom for those suffering under the apartheid regime in South Africa is a shining example of what one man can achieve. He will certainly go down in history as one of the most important political leaders of the 20th century.” “As a Canadian, I was inspired by Mr. Mandela's courage and determination,” Tilson added. “Since the days of John Diefenbaker, Canada worked to further Mr. Mandela's cause, culminating in the bestowing of both the Order of Canada and honourary Canadian citizenship.” Tilson signed the book of condolence the same day Prime Minister Harper led a delegation of former Prime Ministers and other Canadian dignitaries to the State Memorial Service for Mr. Mandela in Johannesburg, South Africa. |
