Tilson participates in historic tree plantingDufferin-Caledon MP David Tilson recently participated in an historic tree planting ceremony in Ottawa with Ken Jewett, Mulmur resident and founder of the Maple Leaves Forever Foundation. The Maple Leaves Forever Foundation has been working for a number of years to have the National Capital Commission (NCC) in Ottawa use only native Canadian maple species in circumstances where a maple tree is called for on NCC lands. NCC Chairman Russell Mills issued a proclamation committing the NCC to just that outcome. “I am very pleased for Mr. Jewett with this result,” Tilson said following a tree planting ceremony in Major's Hill Park, within sight of the Parliament Buildings. “All Canadians know how important the maple leaf is as a symbol of this country, so for the NCC to make this commitment is a great testament to Mr. Jewett's work.” “We value our partnership with the NCC for the planting of Canadian native maples,” Jewett commented. “The maple leaf is our country's most recognizable symbol and it is only fitting that Canadian native maples grace the canvas that is our nation's capital.” Tilson and Jewett were joined by NCC Chairman Russell Mills and CEO Dr. Mark Kristmanson. Maple Leaves Forever is a charitable foundation that advocates and supports the planting of Canadian native maples in increasing numbers across the rural and urban landscape of Ontario. |
