Tilson announces investment in fisheries conservation in CaledonDufferin-Caledon MP David Tilson has announced that through the newly established Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program, the federal government is partnering with the Halton-Peel Woodlands and Wildlife Stewardship to conserve fish habitat in Caledon Creek. “Recreational fishing is a popular leisure activity in Caledon that not only brings family and friends together, but also contributes to our economy by attracting tourists and creating jobs,” Tilson said. “Through partnering with our local groups who work on the ground to conserve fish habitat, the government of Canada helps promote investments in recreational fisheries habitat restoration in our province, for the benefit of our communities in years to come.” “The funding of $5,000 provided today through the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program will help the carry out and deliver the Caledon Creek Brook Trout Restoration,” added Derek Konieczny from the Halton-Peel Woodlands and Wildlife Stewardship. “The restoration work on Caledon Creek is being supported by a number of groups and agencies including the Halton-Peel Woodlands and Wildlife Stewardship, Ontario Streams, Credit Valley Conservation and the Town of Caledon.” The project was submitted during the first round of applications for Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program, which closed July 12. In this first round, 18 projects were approved in Ontario to restore, rebuild, and rehabilitate recreational fisheries habitat. The government will provide as much as $1.4 million to support these projects. The Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program will make as much as $10 million available over the next two years to support recreational fisheries habitat conservation activities. The funding for projects submitted in the first round of applications provides up to $6.5 million for 104 projects to restore, rebuild and rehabilitate recreational fisheries habitat across the country.
