Three positive mosquito pools so far

As Peel Region's West Nile Virus (WNV) surveillance program gets ready to wind down for the year, there have been relatively few incidents in Caledon.
According to the latest update from Peel Public Health, covering the week ending Sept. 14, there have only been three mosquito pools in Town that tested positive. The latest one was reported two weeks ago, and was for a pool near Mono Road. The other two positive results were reported earlier in the summer, in Bolton.
The update stated there's been one confirmed case of the disease in Peel. That involved a Mississauga man, and Public Health staff couldn't say if he got the disease locally or through travel. They also said he's recovered.
There have been 49 mosquito pools that tested positive, including the three in Caledon. Of the rest, 29 were in Brampton and 20 in Mississauga.
The adult mosquito surveillance program started in June. The third and final round of road side catch basin larviciding is complete. It was indicated by a pink dot on the catch basin grate. The treatment of surface water sites on public lands will continue until Sept. 30.
Residents can help reduce the number of mosquitoes around their homes by eliminating stagnant water on the property, and by following these tips:
• Empty or dispose of containers that can hold water, such as old tires, wheelbarrows, barrels, pails, toys and recycling bins.
• Turn over wading pools when they are not in use, remove water that collects on pool covers and make sure the pool's pump is circulating.
• Change water in birdbaths weekly.
• Clear leaves and twigs from eavestroughs.
