By Bill Rea Mayor-elect Allan Thompson has strong support from all over Caledon, although there's room for improvement in Bolton. Thompson was ahead of all his opponents in Wards 1, 2, 3 and 4 in last Monday's municipal elections, but Bolton was a slightly different matter. He took second place in Ward 5 to Gary Cascone, but by only one vote. Cascone had 1,891 votes, according to officials results that were released Monday by the Town of Caledon, to 1,890 for Thompson. Former councillor Ian Sinclair was third with 976, followed by former councillor Nancy Stewart with 696 and George Niras, who stepped out of the race with a couple of weeks remaining in the campaign, but whose name was still on the ballot. He got 62 votes in the ward. It should be pointed out there were four polling stations in Ward 5, as well as an advance poll at Albion-Bolton Community Centre (ABCC). But Ward 3 and 4 voters were able to cast advance ballots at ABCC too, so that would impact on the figures for the ward presented here. There were 1,177 votes cast at that advance polling station. However, looking at the Ward 3 and 4 council races, there were 233 people who voted there in the area council race and 235 for Regional council. The council races for Ward 5 showed 976 people voted in the area council race at the ABCC advance poll and 987 in the Regional contest. Applying those numbers, it is likely the vast majority of people who cast votes in the mayor's race at the ABCC advance poll were Ward 5 residents. In the end, there were 16,133 votes cast in the mayor's race, which the Town reports represents a voter turnout of 34.35 per cent. Thompson collected 7,822 votes overall, good for 48.48 per cent of the total. Sinclair was second with 3,091 (19.16 per cent), followed by Cascone with 2,898 (17.96 per cent), Stewart with 2,199 (13.63 per cent) and Niras with 123 (0.76 per cent). Sinclair, a Ward 1 resident (which consists mainly of the former Township of Caledon), was very strong on his own turf, but not as strong as the victor. Thompson led in the ward with 1,339 (46.66 per cent) to 1,102 for Sinclair (38.4 per cent). Stewart had 303 Ward 1 votes (10.56 per cent), to 121 (4.22 per cent) for Cascone and five (0.17 per cent) for Niras. Thompson is a life-long resident of Ward 2 (which mainly comprises the north half of the former Township of Chinguacousy), and he received more than three-quarters of the votes on his stomping grounds. The final totals gave him 2,385 votes (76.54 per cent). Sinclair and Stewart were tied in Ward 2 with 250 votes each (8.02 per cent), and Cascone trailed with 200 (6.42 per cent), followed by Niras with 31 (0.99 per cent). In Wards 3 and 4 (former village of Caledon East and Township of Albion), Thompson was comfortably ahead of his four opponents, but he fell short of having a majority of the votes. Thompson got 2,193 votes (47.87 per cent), followed by Stewart (who lives in Ward 4) with 934 (20.93 per cent), Sinclair with 751 (16.39 per cent), Cascone with 680 (14.84 per cent) and Niras with 23 (0.5 per cent). --------------------------------------------------- Images: https://caledoncitizen.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/45-EN-thom-2.75-198x300.jpg --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Post date: 2014-11-07 13:42:59 Post date GMT: 2014-11-07 18:42:59 Post modified date: 2014-11-07 13:42:59 Post modified date GMT: 2014-11-07 18:42:59 ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Export of Post and Page as text file has been powered by [ Universal Post Manager ] plugin from www.gconverters.com
