Things to do during March break in and around Caledon

From maple syrup to drumming, there's tons of fun to be had

March break is approaching fast and there's a wide variety of events and activities planned across the Town of Caledon.

The Caledon Public Library (CPL) has activities planned all week long, such as their Shamrock Scavenger Hunt & Contest that will be taking place at all branches. The CPL is also hosting kids can craft sessions on March 13 at 10:30 a.m. in Bolton; March 15 at 2 p.m. in Inglewood; and March 17 at 2 p.m. in Caledon Village.

For ages eight to 12, there's the “Nailed it or Failed it? Book Cover Cookies” happening at the Albion Bolton branch of the CPL at 1 p.m. on March 13.

“Join us for the library-themed edition of the hilariously popular television show,” announced the CPL. “Contestants will try to recreate Instaworthy (Instagram-worthy) favourite book covers!”

For ages six to 12, “A Little Drumming in Everyone” will be held at the Southfields Village Branch at 11 a.m. on March 14. Also, at that branch on March 14 will be “The Art of Hot Sauce Making” at 1 p.m. for ages 11 to 17.

More events are going on at the Southfields Village branch on March 15 and 16. On the fifteenth, there's “Send a Message to an Astronaut” at 10:30 a.m. for ages eight to 13 and on the sixteenth there's “Perler Bead Fun” for teens.

At 7 p.m. on March 16 the CPL will host a virtual March break bingo night, which can be joined through their website. The Friends of the Caledon Public Library will be hosting a book sale all March break at the Caledon East branch, with full sale hours available online on the CPL's website.

Two local author visits are rounding out the week of entertainment planned by the CPL. The first is from Robyn Gram-Barclay, an artist, author and illustrator. She'll be reading both of her books, geared towards ages four to 10, at 10:30 a.m. on March 16 at the Albion Bolton branch. On March 17, author Lisa Oatway will visit the Caledon East branch at 10:30 a.m. to talk about her book, “The Dinosaur Encounter”, that's geared towards ages eight to 12.

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is hosting its popular Maple Syrup in the Park events at Island Lake Conservation Area in Orangeville from March 16 to 19. It's also hosting them at Terra Cotta Conservation Area in Halton Hills from March 11 to 19.

“Maple syrup season is a great time to get outside and have some fun,” says the CVC. “Explore nature, learn about maple syrup and sample the iconic Canadian treat at our conservation areas.”

At Maple Syrup in the Park events, residents can tour maple syrup demonstrations, learn from Indigenous partners, taste maple taffy, enjoy pancakes with real maple syrup, and participate in scavenger hunts. 

Maple Syrup in the Park events run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and tickets must be reserved online at cvc.ca/maple-syrup-in-the-park/.

The Town of Caledon's Recreation department is offering a March bBeak camp for youth ages four to 12 at the Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness and Southfields Community Centre. The cost of the camp is $212.25 and it runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from March 13 to 17.

The camp is set to offer a variety of different activities like outdoor play, creative crafts and active games. Campers will be placed in groups with those who are of a similar age to them. Registration for March break camp can be done online at caledon.ca.

The Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) has activities planned for every day of March break. From March 13 to 17, families are invited to attend PAMA at 9 Wellington St. East in Brampton. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day on the break, there will be creative projects, unique exhibitions in PAMA's historic spaces., and instructor-led family fun activities.

Special guests will be visiting PAMA on March 13, 15, and 17. On the thirteenth, magician “The Amazing Corbin” will perform family-friendly shows at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

On the fifteenth, also at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., “Miss T the Bubble Queen” will present “Bubbleology” where she'll showcase the science and art behind bubbles. She'll make a bubble cube, a tornado in a bubble, a person inside a bubble and more to wow children and their families.

Finally, on March 17, Scientists in School will be hosting hands-on STEM workshops that combine science and art. At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. families can join the scientists to “use shadows, colour, motion, and light to create art from science.” Families will make a puppet, spinning top, kaleidoscope, and even design a galaxy.
