Theatre Orangeville presenting Elvis and Mavis starting next week

Theatre Orangeville will be presenting Elvis and Mavis from March 27 to April 13.
It's a story that resonates with honesty and humour as Elvis, from the south coast of Newfoundland, contemplates the unimaginable — blowing up the Churchill Hydro Dam in Labrador unless the contract between Newfoundland and Quebec is renegotiated. Meanwhile, his wife Mavis sits at home ashamed and embarrassed, ready to strangle her husband. Her only soothing relief is a nice “cup a' tea.”
Elvis and Mavis, written by Jeff Pitcher and directed by David Nairn, has many themes that will resonate with people, where the tug of the big city dreams runs into rural areas. An in the 1990s, when this play is set, the cod fishery is gone, so trying to earn a living in Newfoundland's outports is harder than ever. Elvis (played by Darren Keay) has just lost his job at the Roddington fish plant and is frustrated with the general loss of control of Newfoundland's resources, so he decides to blow up the dam at Churchill Falls unless the unfair contract with Quebec can be renegotiated.
Mavis (Jane Spence) wants to leave rural Newfoundland and head to Ontario, where she can go to university and get a “real job.” Maria Dinn plays Rose, who is the “supportive” neighbor who tries to comfort Mavis through it all.
The play will be presented March 27, 28, 29 and 30, as well as April 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.
