The Art of Politics to be discussed at MillEver wondered what goes on behind the scenes when politicians get together? How the laws that govern our democracy are created and established? What it means to live the life of a politician or political activist? You can find out at Culture Café's The Art of Politics: Up Close and Personal, May 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Alton Mill Arts Centre. Culture Café host Harry Posner is thrilled to offer something rarely seen in politics. “We only ever get to see these people in their ‘political costumes',” he said. “We almost never get to see them as human beings, just like us, who struggle with the complexities and challenges inherent to the culture of politics. I'm inviting politicians to step out of their normal skins, to share their stories and insights into the political ‘game'.” Featured at the event will be politicians from all levels of government. Sharing the stage will be former Liberal MP Murray Calder, current MPP Sylvia Jones, Mayor of Mono Laura Ryan, Councillor Barb Shaughnessy and political activist Liz Armstrong. Following the talks there will be a panel discussion with questions from the audience, moderated by Andrew Welch, author of The Value Crisis. “Politics is a culture, just like any other,” Posner said, “and is deserving of celebration and exploration. This will be an evening devoid of the typical polarized debates we are used to. It's really about engaging the human being behind the political animal.” Tickets at the door, $5 by donation. |
