The art of literacy is at PAMA this weekThe Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) and the Region of Peel have partnered to create The Art of Literacy, a children's art exhibit that will be on display at PAMA until tomorrow (Friday). The artwork displayed in this exhibit is a collection of work from families who are using the Region of Peel's Family Literacy Calendar which supports literacy development for families in their daily life. “We are very proud of this exhibit as it demonstrates the various aspects of literacy and stresses the importance of early learning and development,” said Sonia Pace, director of Children's Services Operations and Community Partnerships with the Region. “In addition to this great learning opportunity for families, we are very honoured to feature these 50 children and their wonderful works of art.” The Region is committed to creating a culture of literacy within the community and hopes this exhibit inspires families to make the most of all learning opportunities presented throughout daily life that support literacy development with children. “Literacy is an essential foundational skill, however 42 per cent of adults in Ontario do not have the literacy skills they need for home, work and life,” Pace said. “This affects all aspects of our community which is why it is so important to begin literacy development from a very young age.” Members of the community are invited to PAMA this March Break to view the exhibit and learn more about how to incorporate literacy into their homes. “PAMA promotes various types of learning through our exhibitions and programs and The Art of Literacy is a perfect example of how broad the topic of literacy extends,” PAMA Manager Marty Brent commented. “We are pleased to feature works from families in our community as they explore learning and development through art.” For more information about family literacy programs and activities offered by the Region throughout the year, visit peelregion.ca/literacy |
