Sustainable Orangeville and CVC invite residents to tree planting

By Brian Lockhart

Sustainable Orangeville and Credit Valley Conservation are inviting area residents to join them in planting native trees and shrubs along the Mill Creek Trail in Orangeville.

Town of Orangeville Councillor Tess Prendergast, chair of Sustainable Orangeville, emphasized that trees and greenery serve a multifaceted purpose beyond aesthetic enhancement for the community.

“They play a vital role in fortifying the ecosystem and providing crucial habitats for wildlife,” Councillor Prendergast said. “Trees mitigate the impact of flooding, store carbon and protect against extreme heat. The annual tree planting events represent a valuable occasion for community members to unite, engage with the local ecosystem, and actively contribute to the realization of a more sustainable future.”

As part of its municipal Tree Canopy Policy, the Town of Orangeville hopes to have a tree canopy of 40 per cent coverage by the year 2040. Community tree planting is one of the many ways the Town works towards achieving this goal.

This year's fall tree planting event will take place on October 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., along Mill Creek Tail, located off Hunter Road.

Roadside parking is available.

Registration is recommended for this event and will be available until October 13. The event date may be subject to change or be cancelled due to inclement weather. Any changes will be communicated by the CVC and the Town of Orangeville via social media channels.

If you are planning on attending, you should wear a hat, long pants and closed-toed shoes. Bring a reusable and refillable water bottle. Water refills will be available.

Also, bring sunscreen and bug spray.

Volunteers under 18 are asked to bring a signed copy of the CVC Youth Event Waiver.

Volunteers over 18 are asked to read and acknowledge the CVC Event Waiver.
