Students get creative to help kids in remote areas

By Bill Rea
Students at Palgrave Public School received lessons in how to paint an iceberg Tuesday; all for a good cause.
The class was taught by renowned local artist Cory Trepanier, and was part of the DARE 2draw campaign, being run by DAREarts.
DAREarts founder Marilyn Field said the young people were making their own creations on cards, which will be sold, with the proceeds going to support the DAREarts First Roots Aboriginal Program. It encourages children in remote communities to use creativity to face some of the unique and serious challenges they have. She pointed out they often live in poverty and isolation, with limited access to help or services.
“We know that the arts have a power of their own,” she remarked.
“You are going to dare to draw,” she told the Grade 7 and 8 students at Palgrave, telling them that as long as they want to help, they will make a difference.
