Southfields Residents Group hosts Diwali celebration

Over 2,000 people attend event at Dennison Park

A celebration of the festival of lights lit up the moods of Southfields Village residents this past Monday.

The Southfields Residents Group worked hard to put on a Diwali celebration, complete with a massive, legal fireworks show, on October 24.

Southfields Residents Group co-chair Alessandra Carvalho said the event was a resounding success, with an estimated 2,000 people in attendance.

“It was an incredible fireworks show like nothing I have ever seen before,” said Carvalho. “We had Caledon Fire there, we had (Caledon OPP) auxiliary there, they even posted about it on their Twitter. Everyone was very respectful, there was very little cleanup. Everyone just had a really good time with their families.”

A post from the official OPP Central Region Twitter account wished Caledon residents a happy Diwali: “Congratulations to the Southfields Village Resident Group (in partnership with Chalo! FreshCo) and volunteers in hosting a great event!”

Carvalho noted that Mortgages by Michelle was another major sponsor of the event, and many smaller sponsors helped make the event a success too.

Carvalho said the Southfields Residents Group has been an amazing initiative and that she's lucky to work with such a great group of people. Up next for them is their Christmas tree lighting event, with details to come in the future.

“We have a really great team, the events will just keep growing,” said Carvalho.

The Town of Caledon was also a big help with the Diwali event, said Carvalho, and the residents group was appreciative of their support. All leftover food from the Diwali event was donated to the Knights Table food bank.
