Sept. 6 — Annual quilt raffle part of Kleinburg Binder Twine Festival

The 2014 Kleinburg Binder Twine's annual raffle quilt is now on display at the Kleinburg Pharmacy in Canadiana Square.
This year's quilt is a queen size pink and green, Little bit of Lace themed quilt. The quilt squares are entries from the 2013 quilt square contest. Last year's fabric bundles included a small amount of lace for participants to include.
For those unable to get to the Kleinburg, the quilt can be viewed on the Festival's website www.bindertwine.ca
The annual raffle quilt is a one of a kind sewing masterpiece made with the entries from the previous year's Quilt Square Contest. Avid sewers can enter a quilt square in the yearly contest. Many of the entries are sewn by local residents and it is not difficult to see how many unique squares there are, made by very talented sewers.
The annual Quilt Square Contest is one of the Festival's oldest traditions. The contest was initiated in 1982 when the group of Kleinburg ladies responsible for making a raffle quilt for the Festival were no longer able to do so. A suggestion was made to have the Festival Quilt a community project, so participants could sew a quilt square and with sufficient entries a raffle quilt could be made. During the winter, the quilt squares are sewn together to make a quilt top. The top is then hand stitched together with a batting and backing. This process is also known as quilting and the Nobleton United Church Quilters take several six-to-eight-hour days to complete this step. The Binder Twine quilt echoes the Festival's community spirit, volunteers working together to create a work of art.
Binder Twine is this Saturday (Sept. 6). The Quilt will be on display at the Quilt Booth.
Visitors to the booth can purchase tickets for $2 each or three for $5. Prior to the Festival, tickets can be purchase from any participating Kleinburg merchant. This year's quilt is valued at $1,800 and the money raised from the raffle will go to the Kleinburg Public School Library.
Visitors to the Quilt Booth will also get a glimpse of next year's quilt by viewing the entries for this year's Quilt Square Contest and have an opportunity to participate in the Viewer's Choice Awards by voting for their favourite quilt square. One might think this is an easy task, drop by the quilt booth and decide on your favourite.
As the annual Festival and the famous Queen Contest comes to a close, the newly crowned Binder Twine Queen performs her first official duty and selects the winning quilt raffle ticket. It's a Festival highlight not to be missed and an opportunity to win a treasured piece of Kleinburg history.36-quilt - 5.5 inch
