Resounding success as Madness returnsWritten By KIRA WRONSKA DORWARD Midnight Madness returned with resounding success. Last Friday evening, downtown Bolton was buzzing with community spirit as locals of all ages and backgrounds came out to enjoy the fun while supporting local businesses. Most activities took place south of King, where streets were filled with vendors, activity centres for children such as the Safety Zone sponsored by Tim Hortons' owner Brad Stafford, the Peel 4H Rabbit Hopping Club, and a portable reptile zoo, plus a stage for a variety show organized by Stage Academy. This resurgence of Midnight Madness was due in no small part to many local business owners who also served as organizers or on the planning committee. East of Fifty Soap and Candle Co. owner Sarah Leslie was one who helped to bring about the event that had been much-missed by residents and businesses. “You can tell by the turnout that the community is responding,” said Leslie, whose wonderful aromatic booth drew many customers on scent alone. Mercato employee Rosalia Borageno commented on how good the exposure was for local businesses, especially for those located on the South Hill. It was the first time at Midnight Madness for the bakery and deli, which was selling various flavours of macarons like hotcakes, along with cannoli and espresso. “If all goes well,” said Borageno, “we'll do it every year and make it an annual summer event.” Also on the planning committee was Dr. Joe Lisco of Inside Out Family Chiropractic, who spent the evening giving free posture assessments to residents. With an eye as adept at picking out posture problems as it was in assessing the importance of bringing back the event, Dr. Lisco emphasized how Midnight Madness brings awareness of what this community can provide, from a business perspective. “The more businesses we have, and the more aware people are of what they can utilize in the future, the more money that comes back into the community,” summed up the chiropractor. Objectives for bringing back the event were both economic and social. Aside from engaging the downtown and getting residents familiar with local businesses, the main goal was to bring the community together and have a good time while showcasing local talent, including the artisans, the live performances, and the good food. Even our MPP Sylvia Jones, now Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, was present in her own booth to support the event. Considering this year's success, we can look forward to an even better Midnight Madness next August. |
