Puck drops on annual Bill Whitbread Tournament in Caledon East

By Jake Courteptte
Caledon house league hockey's staple tournament was back for its fourth installment recently.
Close to 30 teams from across Southern Ontario converged on Caledon East for the Bill Whitbread Memorial Tournament, including nine teams from the hosting organization, Caledon Minor Hockey Association.
The annual tournament was renamed from the Master's Tournament to the Whitbread Memorial two years ago, with the CMHA stating they wished to “do their part to keep Bill's legacy vital.”
Mr. Whitbread got his start with the Bolton Enterprise (now known as the Caledon Enterprise) while he was in high school, earning the title of Sports Editor in 1963.
He passed away at the Enterprise offices about three years ago.
With the puck dropping Friday afternoon, more than two full days of hockey resulted in a win for the atom Beeton Stingers in the first championship match Sunday.
The peewee division saw the Oakville Blizzards and Strathroy Jr. Rockets battle it out for supremacy, with Oakville coming out on top.
Registration for the 2016-17 season has already begun, with the full schedule for rep tryouts available at www.caledonminorhockey.ca
