Political rookie running for trustee’s job

By Bill Rea
Tony Megilo has been interested in what goes on in the community, and he'd like to build on that.
Megilo has announced he will seek the trustee seat for Caledon and Dufferin County on the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.
He has been a resident of Bolton for a little more than a year, and he said this will be his first venture into the political arena.
“I'm not going to complain about something if there's something I can do about it,” he said.
Among the things Megilo said he wants to see is more accommodation for before and after-school daycare. He would want trustees to look in the board's budget for more money that could be allocated to places where parents want it.
“What ever's more important to the parents right now,” Megilo said is a priority. The father of two also pointed to the growth coming in the area, wanting to make sure the Catholic system doesn't take a back seat to the other religions, adding he also wants to make sure the taxes of Catholic supporters go to the right board.
Megilo is a skilled tradesman in the auto collision area for the Toronto Transit Commission, and he's also been a union representative for about five years. He said that experience has taught him about negotiation and dealing with people.
Megilo was rather fatalistic when it came to commenting on his chances of election.
“It's always hard to beat an incumbent,” he said, adding there is a steep learning curve involved in being a trustee. “I promise to do my best and I'd be very accessible.”
