Title: Police will enforce excessive noise from motorcycles

For many years, police officers all over Ontario have utilized two specific charges under the Highway Traffic Act to help deal with unreasonable noise levels produced by motorcycles.
These laws were developed to combat drivers who specifically choose to drive a motorcycle on the road after either removing the muffler, using a defective muffler or purchasing an aftermarket muffler designed to be loud.
Caledon OPP plans to use the available charges under the Highway Traffic Act to battle this issue, but also the relatively new Town of Caledon noise bylaw that was enacted in February 2012.
Inspector Rose DiMarco, detachment commander, reported this bylaw specifically deals with decibel levels analyzed by a sound meter under stringent testing conditions. Town bylaw officers have been trained in the use of this equipment and will be out in full force, accompanied by members of the Caledon OPP, she said
The Highway Traffic Act covers vehicles that do not have a muffler or use an improper one, and there are also provisions against making unnecessary noise.
The set penalty is a fine of $110.
The Town's noise bylaw also carries a set fine of $110, which includes the $25.00 victim fine surcharge.
