Police warn motorists to be careful over summer vacation

School is done for the year, and summer vacation season will see many families spending quality time together as they embark on what they hope will be a summer filled with positive family memories.
The roads to cottage country, area campgrounds and to local recreational venues will become very busy and heavily travelled, and OPP want motorists to be careful when travelling along them over the next couple of months.
“We will see more children throughout the day in areas that we are not normally used to seeing them,” OPP Chief Superintendent Brad Blair. “Please reduce your speed when travelling through neighbourhoods and look for young children.”
“Parents are also encouraged to set a positive example for their children and to always wear safety equipment such as bicycle helmets, personal floatation devices and their seatbelts,” he added.
Any loss of life is not only tragic, police pointed out, it can be preventable, provided people exercise good judgement and make wise decisions when it comes to participating in any summer related activity.
“Many of the unfortunate tragedies seen by the OPP, especially during the summer months, are preventable,” Blair said. “That being said, people need to stop and think through their actions before they act. Regrettably, it can be these actions that can put first responders and members of the public at risk when they come to provide assistance.”
OPP remains focused upon its goal of providing safe roads, safe trails and safe waterways and is asking everyone to do their part.
