The weather was great last Thursday for the 89th annual Plowing Match, put on by the Peel-Dufferin Plowmen's Association.
Hosted by the Johnston Family at their Torbram Road farm, the event attracted a good crowd and lots of fun activity.
“It's a pretty good way of getting your community together,” Peel Regional Chair and CEO Emil Kolb.
Among the contests that took place, Caledon Mayor Marolyn Morrison won the Mayors' Plowing Challenge.
And Terra Cotta Resident Julia Thompson was named Peel-Dufferin's Queen on the furrow, winning over Palgrave's Victoria Wilhelm.
In her address to the judges, Thompson spoke about Women in Agriculture, stating she comes from a long line of farmers on both her mother and father's side.
“I am a woman of agriculture,” she said, adding farm women have always done more than just cook.
When she was young and her father had a seed business, she remembered her mothere taking her and her brother along when she made deliveries.
“Dad called it ‘the squawk and talk' delivery service,” she said.
“Farm women have always had an important role on the family farm, but, like everything else, it's a role that is constantly changing,” she observed.

Former Inglewood area resident David Julian was back last Thursday, driving this 1953 Massey Harris model.

Ken O'Brien, co-chair of this year's International Plowing Match being held in Simcoe County, was on hand to bring greetings.
