This initiative is used to bring hands-on learning opportunities and fresh food to students in the community.  The program includes over 16 public schools in Caledon and is led by outgoing Peel District School Board School Trustee Stan Cameron and run by the Albion Hills Community Farm. Cameron and Manager of the Albion Hills Community Farm Karen Hutchinson, who was also present at the presentation, helped to get the project up and growing in 2022 and since then have seen how the project has blossomed since.  Caledon Public School's Vegetable Garden will teach students how food grows by getting students to plant seeds before the end of the school year and have volunteers take care of the plants until students return back to school in the fall to help harvest the vegetables and donate them to local food banks in the community.  This will not only teach the children about growing fresh food, but also show them how easy it is to lend a hand and help members of the community. The idea for the donation came from Heather French and Allison French Sales Representatives at Pioneer Seeds who saw the vegetable gardens at the schools and wanted to help out. Together, they applied for a grant through their parent company, Corteva Agriscience Community Betterment program, that focuses on helping communities in need and funding projects related to food security, agriculture, education and community life and were granted the funds.  The vegetable program has also received many community supporters that have all had a hand in helping out the program.  Organizations such as Davis Feed and Farm Supply and Glen Echo provided seeds and seedlings, Bolton Home Hardware and Home Depot provided lumber, screws and other supplies, Humberview and Mayfield Secondary School Construction Tech student built the raised gardens, parent councils purchased organic soil and support from Town of Caledon and other grants helped to purchase gardening equipment such as hoses and rain barrels.  Since the beginning of the Caledon Public School's Vegetable Program four years ago to now, the project has impacted roughly 15,000 people in Caledon and continues to teach students the importance of teamwork, living healthy and how to care for others.  The donation from Humberview Farms Ltd and Pioneer Seeds will make sure that the school gardens continue to grow and teach children. “Thank you to Allison and Heather French for submitting the grant application for us and for today's presentation”, says Cameron. “And thank you Pioneer Seeds for this wonderful gift for our next step Caledon school gardens.” --------------------------------------------------- Images: --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Post date: 2026-08-27 11:39:20 Post date GMT: 2026-08-27 15:39:20 Post modified date: 2026-09-03 11:34:35 Post modified date GMT: 2026-09-03 15:34:35 ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Export of Post and Page as text file has been powered by [ Universal Post Manager ] plugin from www.gconverters.com
