Pause for Reflection: Caledon offers many ways to Remember this NovemberBy Riley Murphy Local Journalism Initiative Reporter This year, for Remembrance Day, not only are there numerous services held across Caledon, but also several initiatives. Services begin on November 1st and run until November 11. On November 1st, the Mono Mills Remembrance Day Service will take place at the Mono Mills Cenotaph on 35 Victoria Crescent at 11 am. On November 9, there will be two services held in Caledon. The first is the Alton Remembrance Day Service, which will be held at the Alton Legion Hall at 10:15 am. There will also be a potluck lunch following the service. The second will be the Bolton Remembrance Day Service, held at the Bolton Cenotaph at Laurel Hill Cemetery at 12:30 pm. On November 11, the Caledon East Remembrance Day Service will be held at the Caledon East Cenotaph at Town Hall at 10:50 am. For those interested in sponsoring the laying of a wreath on behalf of an individual, family, or organization at either the Bolton or Caledon East Service, please contact events@caledon.ca. The Town of Caledon recently installed Commemorative Crosswalks in various locations around Caledon to honour our veterans. The project was realized through collaboration between a number of partners, including the Town, the Region of Peel, the local Alton Legion, and Jason Figliano. Figliano, from the Canadian Black Belt Academy, says he wanted to see something done in the community to honour veterans, as he trains with many of them and feels they often don't get enough recognition. The idea first came about in 2022, and he says the community truly came together to get this done, making it a team effort. Bolton Coffee Time is running a Poppy Donut Fundraiser in partnership with the Alton Legion. This year, they created custom yeast donuts decorated to look like poppies in support of the Alton Legion Branch 449. Each donut is three dollars, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated directly to the Legion to assist veterans and local community members. Coffee Time shared they're honoured to do their part in supporting those who have served our country and community. They are currently accepting pre-orders for the poppy donuts, and they will be available for pickup and delivery, pending quantity, from November 1 – 15. Coffee Time didn't stop there this year; they will also be sponsoring St. Michael Catholic Secondary School's “Field of Crosses.” For their Field of Crosses, the school will paint over 100 crosses for the 120 names on the Caledon-based cenotaphs, with white and “Caledon Remembers.” Next year, they'll include the names of the fallen. This year, residents are also invited to join the Region of Peel in Peel Remembers: The Second World War. At this drop-in-style event, attendees can join archivists to remember the sacrifices of Peel residents. This year's event will focus on the Second World War in honour of the 80th anniversary of the end of the conflict. It will run on Thursday, November 6th, from 4 pm to 8 pm, and on Saturday, November 8th, from 10 am to 4 pm. |
