PAMA celebrates Museum Month with exciting programs and events


May is Museum Month at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA).
Come experience a variety of spring exhibitions and new programs, special events and workshops. From talks and tours to concerts and Family Fun Days, excitement awaits everyone. Enjoy free admission May 20 and 21. PAMA will be closed Victoria Day Monday, May 22.
New May programs, events and workshops
What Makes this Country Tick? is a community art project with drop-in opportunities to create. It is running May 7 from 1 to 4 p.m., with displays going from May 4 to Aug. 31.
Share your favourite symbols or images of Canada by submitting an artwork that will be part of a community art project displayed at PAMA. Create your piece at PAMA on the activity date or at home. Artwork will be installed as they are received between May 4 and August 15. Check PAMA's website for full details.
Messages and Media will be the topic of an archives tour and talk tonight (Thursday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In this expanded edition of the exhibit of written correspondence, Archivist Samantha Thompson reflects on writing and technology that will make people think about how they communicate. A private viewing of the exhibit follows an informal talk interwoven with intriguing historical facts and images of a large array of communications documents. This event is included with the cost of admission.
The Art of Yoga for people aged 16 and older will also take place tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Need relaxation? Join the art of yoga and let it all go. Bring your own yoga mat. All skill levels are welcome. Inspiration for each yoga practice will be based on current art gallery exhibitions. This program is included with the cost of admission.
Brampton Folk Club will present a musical evening entitled Winds Blowing and Waters Flowing, backed by a changing line-up of local musicians. it will be May 11 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Experience an in-the-round concert with stories for Canada 150. This event is included with the cost of admission.
The theme for Family Fun Days in May will be Journeys. The next day is May 20 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Family art and yoga will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m.; family art and stories will be from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.; the family tour will be from 4 to 4:30 p.m. and the family fun activity and colouring room will run all day. These activities are included in the cost of admission.
There will be a Journeys Comic Making Workshop that day from 1 to 3 p.m. Take a journey and be inspired by Terry Fox in this comic book-making workshop led by local artist Ricky Lima. Learn the art of storytelling, idea brainstorming and comic book panel composition. Join this fantastic workshop and get comic book creative. The cost is $29.75 for members of PAMA and $35 for non members.
Artists Open Studio
Calling all artists and art lovers! Come together to work in an open studio setting May 25 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Work independently, share or collaborate in this supportive studio environment. All art forms are welcome. Bring your own supplies, no solvent based materials. Free admission to studio only.
There will be a reading and book signing with Steve Paikin, author of Bill Davis, Nation Builder and Not So Bland After All. It will be May 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. It promises to be an engaging evening with the chance to discover things you didn't know about Brampton Billy. William Grenville (Bill) Davis represented Peel at Queen's Park for 26 years and was the Premier of Ontario from 1971 to 1985. This event is included with the cost of admission.
There will be a Journeys Comic Marathon (drop-in) May 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Let your stories come to life in this comic book event with local artist Ricky Lima. Get ready to be an illustrator and be part of this marathon journey. The cost of this drop-in program is included with admission.
A Drawing Workshop will take place May 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. These art workshops are ideal for all skill levels — from the curious to experienced artist. Take part in hands-on activities and be inspired by the exhibitions and collections at PAMA. The cost is $29.75 for members and $35 for non-members.
Take in an artist talk with Charles Pachter May 28 from 3 to 4 p.m. He will be in conversation with PAMA's Art Gallery Curator Thomas Smart. This talk is included with the cost of admission. Enjoy his thoughtful, contemplative, ironic, humorous and deeply personal stories about his journey as a Canadian artist.
