Pair of upsets characterized men’s hockey action over the last week


Last Monday (Nov. 4) saw a couple of surprises in Caledon Senior Hockey League play.
The Jiffy Lube Oilers exploded for their first win of the season. And the first-place George's Arena Sports were whipped 6-2 by the red-hot Rutherford Global Logistics. The other match of the evening saw Fines Ford Lincoln down Baffo's Pizza 5-2.
Jiffy Lube 8, BCC 3
Powered by four goals and an assist from Ron Sampson, plus five assists from Joe Palumbo, Jiffy Lube waxed Bolton Chiropractic Centre 8-3.
Also coming up big in the scoring for Jiffy Lube was Jim Rogers with a goal and three assists, while Bill MacKenzie struck for two goals. Luch Pinarello had the other goal for the winners, along with an assist. Danny Avram and Chris Spilar had two assists each, while David Shoalts had one.
Steve Tarasco had a goal and an assist for Bolton Chiropractic, with Marty Madensky and Robert Masutti getting the other goals. John Pitsadiotis notched two assists with Jim Schaefer getting a single.
Fines Ford 5, Baffo's 2
Peter Coghill led the way for Fines Ford with a goal and two assists. Bill Jenner had a goal and an assist and the other goals came from Steve Sanderson, Bernie Tisdale and Jeff Boyles. Single assists came from Nick Rotundo, Dominic Spignasi and Bruno Fracassi.
James Heenan and Bill Cowton scored for Baffo's with the assists going to John Castellucci and Rick Agar.
Rutherford 6, George's 2
Paul Speck had a goal and three assists to lead Rutherford to its third consecutive win.
Frank Cirone had a goal and two assists with Dan LaBine, Jim Horan and Bill Moyer each getting a goal and an assist. Jim Dunbar also scored while Don Dupuis and Ted Callighen had single assists.
Greg Collins and Clark Judge scored for George's with Bill Doherty notching two assists. Ralph Ricardi had a single assist.
Oct. 28
The previous Monday saw George's and Fines Ford wind up in a 5-5 tie in a showdown between the top two teams in the league.
That meant George's hung on to first place with a 5-1-1 record and 11 points, one point ahead of Fines Ford.
In the other games, Jiffy Lube dropped a 6-4 decision to Baffo's and Rutherford whipped Bolton Chiropractic 7-2.
George's 5, Fines Ford 5
Jack Gibson and George Armstrong led the way for George's with four points each.
Armstrong had two goals and two assists while Gibson had one goal and three helpers. Mark Milton contributed with a goal and an assist, and Bill Davis also scored for the winners. Al McFadyen and Murray Hurst each had an assist.
Rotundo and Tisdale each notched three points for Fines. Rotundo had two goals and an assist while Tisdale had a goal and two assists. Paul Burrell and Jenner had the other Fines goals with Fracassi notching two assists. Single assists went to Boyles, Spignasi, Bob Smith, Mike Gallop and Gary Hoxey.
Baffo's 6, Jiffy Lube 4
Jiffy Lube fell behind 5-0 in the first period and despite coming back hard in the second and third with four consecutive goals, was unable to reel in Baffo's.
John Castelucci racked up four assists for Baffo's while the goals were scored by Bill Cowtan, Dave Boyd, Rich Petrie, Heenan (who also had an assist), Scott Woodcock and Agar. Gary Faultless and Mark Perrin both had two assists while single helpers went to Dave Smith, Mike Oliver and Brian Samuel.
Gord Smith and Sampson led the way for Jiffy Lube with a goal and two assists each. Rogers had a goal and an assist while Maurizo Giorgio also scored. Palumbo had one assist.
Rutherford 7, BCC 2
Garth Young was the top point-man for Rutherford with a goal and three assists. LaBine scored two goals, while Speck had a goal and two assists. Callighen scored a goal and assisted on one while single assists were notched by Dave Armstrong, Dupuis and Dunbar.
Tarasco was the Bolton Chiropractic marksman with assists going to Gary Stewart and Dan Tasson.
