Officers in Caledon continue to be on the look-out for distracted drivers

Caledon OPP have continued conducting public education and targeted enforcement during the distracted driving campaign.
They would like to take this time to remind motorists to keep their eyes on the road and electronic devices left alone while driving.
The Highway Traffic Act was amended several years ago to include a section prohibiting driving while using a hand-held electronic device. However, to this day, some drivers do not appear to get the message.
“Distracted driving remains a leading cause of motor vehicle collisions resulting in serious bodily harm or death,” observed Inspector Tim Melanson, detachment commander. “It's not worth putting yourself or others at risk.”
Motorists are reminded that if they must use a cell phone in a hand-held manner, they must pull over, completely off the roadway and not in a live lane. Waiting at a red light or while stopped in a line-up of traffic is not considered “off the roadway” and such people risk being charged for the offence.
Since March 14, Caledon OPP officers have charged 108 drivers with distracted driving offences along with four persons being charged with Impaired Operation.
