New hangar opening at Great War Flying Museum

By Zachary Roman

A new hangar is opening today, October 13, at the Great War Flying Museum.

If you're reading this story before 1 p.m., you can catch Caledon Mayor Allan Thompson in attendance at the grand opening, which begins at that time at the Brampton-Caledon Airport. The Great War Flying Museum was the recipient of the funds from the Caledon Council Community Golf Tournament held in 2019.  The funds from the tournament supported the building of the new hangar.

The grand opening of the Great War Flying Museum's new hangar comes just over a month after a record-breaking Airport Day at the Brampton-Caledon Airport. Attendance soared there on September 11 for the annual day dedicated to the joy of aviation.

Thompson was also a special guest at the Brampton-Caledon Airport's annual Airport Day event. He was there to congratulate the Brampton Flying Club (BFC) on its induction into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame. The club, which runs the airport, received the Hall of Fame's Belt of Orion Award of Excellence earlier this year.

Airport Day included a vast array of activities, and upon arrival air cadets were directing traffic in the busy parking lot. Walking into the event, live music was playing and replica World War I airplanes were doing fly-bys to crowds of onlookers.

People were taking airport tours, and all of the sightseeing flights being offered that day were booked up. Attendees enjoyed a barbeque lunch, and there were many activities for the little ones. The Great War Flying Museum was open and proud to show off its collection and share aviation history with the crowds.

BFC communications lead Sam Meandro said he believes this year's Airport Day was the busiest ever.
