MORE THAN A RIDE: Why Seniors’ Transportation Matters Now

In Caledon, transportation is not just about moving from one place to another. It is about preserving dignity, independence and human connection. At Caledon Community Services (CCS), this truth is lived every day. What began in 1971 as a simple phone line connecting residents to local help has grown into the community's largest social service agency, supporting seniors in numerous ways.

CCS provides food security, operates a specialist clinic and delivers an essential lifeline through our buses and vans, providing seniors and adults with disabilities with vital transportation in a region without public transit.

The impact of that service is deeply personal. One story stands out: a senior gentleman who relied on CCS transportation three times a week to visit his wife in long-term care. That journey was never ‘just a ride.' It was love in motion. It was continuity, connection and the refusal to let distance or circumstance sever a lifelong bond. This is the quiet, powerful role CCS plays, combating isolation and keeping people connected to what matters most.

In a community geographically larger than Brampton and Mississauga combined, the barriers to mobility are real. Without accessible transportation, seniors can lose access to medical care, groceries, social services and the simple joys of community life. CCS drivers don't just navigate roads; they build relationships. They know their passengers' stories, their families and their needs. They provide not only safe and comfortable travel, but reassurance and companionship along the way.

This vital service is at a crossroads. Six buses in the CCS fleet will need to be replaced by 2027. Without investment now, the very connections that sustain our community are at risk.

That is why Velocity, our Ride to Support Seniors on June 20, is so important. This is more than a fundraising event. It is a community call-to-action. By participating, donating or supporting riders, you're helping ensure seniors continue to access not only essential services, but the relationships that give life meaning.

You can register today at ccsvelocity.ca and be part of the effort to keep Caledon connected.

Transportation is freedom. Transportation is connection. Transportation is life. On June 20, let's come together to turn bike rides into bus rides and keep Caledon moving.
