The Town of Caledon is running a “Fall for Caledon” tourism campaign this year, which highlights the many things Caledon residents and tourists can do beyond the classic activity of going for a drive to view the changing leaves. Being a rural community, there's a plethora of local pumpkin patches people can visit in Caledon. Whether you need a pumpkin for the purposes of carving, a pumpkin pie, or roasting pumpkin seeds — or all of the above — you can find one right here at home. There's Albion Orchards, Davis Family Farms, Downey's Farm, Dixie Orchards, Rock Garden Farms, and more. The Citizen recently visited Downey's Farm to photograph families enjoying the fall fun in the sea of pumpkins out front of the farm. This reporter is no stranger to enjoying the Fall, having just visited Dixie Orchards for some apple picking and Davis Family Farms for a Fall market. Apple picking fun can also be had at Albion Orchards, Downey's U-Pick, and Spirit Tree Estate Cidery, the latter of which is known for making apples into delicious adult beverages. When picking apples, make sure to turn the apple upside-down and pull it up off the tree. This ensures you won't knock other apples out of the tree in the process. Be sure to ask orchard employees about what kinds of apples are best for what you want to do with them. Some are better for baking, while others are best for biting into right away! As of October 9, I can report that Empire Apples are tasting great, and I was told they're perfect for use in pies. Just because the weather's getting colder doesn't mean you can't get out and enjoy a local craft cold one. The Town is hosting a contest on Instagram right now that encourages people to share a photo of their dream six-pack of Caledon craft beers and ciders. The grand prize is an overnight stay at Mount Alverno Luxury Resort, two passes to Davis Family Farms' 2023 Sunflower Festival, and $25 to spend at a brewery or cidery of your choice. To enter, residents must be of legal drinking age, follow @visitcaledon on Instagram, and tag @visitcaledon in a post that shows your ultimate Caledon six-pack using the hashtags #fallforcaledon and #caledoncraft. Your six choices must include beverages from at least two participating breweries or cideries — spread the love! Those companies participating in the Caledon craft contest are Badlands Brewing Company, Caledon Hills Brewing Company, Downey's Estate Winery, GoodLot Farmstead Brewing, Pommies Cider, Sonnen Hill Brewing, and Spirit Tree Estate Cidery. I'm partial to enjoying a great local beer once the paper has been set to press, so perhaps I'll have to enter this particular contest myself. Numerous events are being held to celebrate Fall in Caledon. Events being promoted by the Town so far are Downey's Pumpkin Fest, Campbell's Cross Corn Maze & Painted Pumpkin Museum, Empty Bowls Headwaters, Davis Family Farms Ghostly Greenhouses, Lorraine Roberts Art Show and Sale, and Caledon Chamber Concerts Presents Trio Domika.
