Local student served Queen’s Park as Page

A Grade 8 student from Dufferin-Caledon constituency, Sachkaur Chahal, was selected to serve as a Legislative Page at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto.

During her term of duty, the Page served as a messenger on the floor of the Legislative Chamber, met key parliamentary figures, the Premier and Deputy Premier, and learned about Ontario's parliamentary system of government.

Sachkaur's term of duty lasted for three weeks during the months of October and November 2023 parliamentary session.

Sachkaur earned the Legislative Page spot in the program by submitting an application that included an essay outlining her achievements, involvements, and suitability for the program.

As a Page, she has to study and learn the faces, names and locations of all the MPPs before arriving at Queen's Park for her first day.

Legislative Pages selected from different ridings across the province come together at Queen's Park; they develop long lasting friendships and meet fellow students with similar interests as they participate in this unique educational program.

Sachkaur, being a Page, got an opportunity to follow the Sergeant-at-Arms, carrying the Mace over his shoulder, leading a procession along the hallways of the Legislative Building to the Chamber. The Speaker, Clerk, Table Clerks and two Legislative Pages follow the Sergeant-at-Arms.

During a typical day in the program, Page Sachkaur arrived at Queen's Park at approximately 8 a.m., dressed in her uniforms and then prepared the Legislative Chamber for the morning's debates.

As the day progresses, Sachkaur was involved in a number of activities, including taking classes in legislative process and mathematics, delivering messages and water for the MPPs in the Chamber, and meeting with key legislative players such as the party leaders and the Speaker of the House.

The Legislative Assembly is excited to welcome the students chosen to participate.
