Local author publishes young adult novel

Palgrave United Church minister Cathy Hird's new young adult novel Moon of the Goddess takes the reader back 3,000 years, to the land of Greece in the Age of Heroes.
Hird will be at Forster's Book Garden in Bolton this Saturday (March 22) from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. There will be a reading from the novel at 2 p.m.
Although this novel will delight boys and girls in their early teens, adults will also enjoy the story as Hird delves into the history and mythology of ancient Greece, the time Homer describes. Details of the landscape come from her visits to the ocean shores and mountains of that land. Her knowledge of Greek mythology adds texture to the story.
In Moon of the Goddess, Hird draws on ancient mythology to touch on questions that are current. The novel is a coming of age story that addresses the struggle to conquer fear and gain inner strength. Building partnership with unexpected companions, conquering self-centered ambition, and finding the strength to endure are just a few of the threads that run through this work.
Hird tells the story of the kidnapped daughter of a king and the race to rescue her. The young woman is caught between the rising power of the Olympian god Poseidon and an ancient earth goddess. Her brother sets out to rescue her without sparking a war between the city of the kidnappers and his own.
Moon of the Goddess is Hird's first novel. In addition to her work as a minister, she runs a sheep farm in Grey County with her family. The novel is available at Forster's Book Garden.
