Local artist needed for installation at Albion Bolton branch of Caledon Public LibraryArtists can submit applications until February 28 By Zachary Roman Caledon artists have a chance to have their art displayed in a prominent location in the community. The Caledon Public Library (CPL) has announced it is seeking applications from local artists for an installation at its Albion Bolton branch. At the entrance to the branch, behind the front desk, there are three large bookshelf ends. The CPL would like an artist to design art for these bookshelf ends to make them a warm and welcoming entrance to the branch's childrens' area. “We are inviting local artists, designers and creators to submit their expressions of interest, samples of their artwork along with a creative brief or design concept,” said the CPL in a statement. “We consider it our priority to celebrate culture and inclusion, supporting Caledon's creative talent and cultural economy by showcasing local authors, artists, performers, and makers.” Mary Maw, the CPL's Manager of Communications and Community Development, said opening this art project to the public is really an extension of the library's Artful Caledon initiative. Artful Caledon is a means to support and promote Caledon artists and all the great work they do. “It's one of our favourite initiatives ever,” said Maw. When talking with a design company about the bookshelf ends, Maw said the CPL realized it would be a way better idea to have a local artist design them, since Artful Caledon is all about showcasing local artists. Maw explained the CPL is reaching out to local high schools to ask students to let students know about applying too. Applications are open for artists 14 and older online at caledon.library.on.ca/public-art-project, now until February 28. All who apply will be contacted by the CPL, regardless of if they move forward or not. Non-Caledon artists can apply, but Caledon artists will be given preference. Since there's three bookshelf ends, artists can create three individual images, or a set of three artistic works meant to be appreciated together. Artists can work in any medium they want, as their artwork will be digitized into vinyl wall wraps that will be installed on the bookshelf ends. The ends are 23-and-a-quarter inches wide and 57-and-a-half inches high. Laura Nolloth, CPL Communications and Community Development Coordinator, said the art installation will really be a conversation piece and a focal point of the Albion Bolton branch. The successful applicant will receive a $500 honorarium for their work.
