Kolb and Morrison take leave of Regional council

By Bill Rea
It was an emotional time last Thursday as the current Peel Regional council held it's last meeting.
It was the last meeting for Regional Chair and CEO Emil Kolb. He has sat on council since its formation in 1974, first as Regional representative for Wards 3 and 4 in Caledon, followed by two terms as Caledon's mayor and finally as Chair since 1991.
“It has always been amazing to me how well we have worked together,” he told his colleagues at the conclusion of the meeting, adding that has been the case with councils past and present.
He also said that he has constantly been asked how he was able to have a council with so many women, adding the mayor of Calgary once told him he was jealous.
“I always said I always thought there was a great place in politics for strong women,” he said, pointing to the fact the three municipalities in the region have had woman mayors for years.
“I wanted to just really thank you all for the great gift you have given me to be chair for all of these years,” he told his colleagues, also thanking the residents and businesses of Peel, as well as the staff of the Region.
“I'm looking forward to spending more time with my wife Beryle,” Kolb said.
He also recognized the councillors who are not running in this month's elections, including Caledon Mayor Marolyn Morrison. He presented a clock to Morrison, as well as to Councillors Sandra Hames and Paul Palleschi of Brampton, and Pat Mullin and Katie Mahoney of Mississauga. Mayor Hazel McCallion is also retiring, but she was not at last week's meeting.
Morrison also expressed her thanks to Kolb, as well as her council colleagues and staff.
She also urged the councillors who are hoping to remain after the elections not to get so removed from the public that people will say they don't listen, and told them to make sure they keep the Region financially viable.
“Don't ever let anyone push, bully or intimidate you,” she concluded. “You do what's right for your municipality.”
