Junior firefighters blaze through training campCaledon Fire and Emergency Services hosted a special graduation ceremony July 19 for the Junior Firefighter Camp graduates at the Caledon East Fire Hall. The week-long program allowed children seven to 12 to work closely with professional firefighters to learn about fire safety and other aspects of the job; all while having fun. Throughout the program, the campers received hands-on training in fire safety and prevention alongside Public Education Officer Gillian Boyd and Firefighter Darryl Thompson of Caledon Fire and Emergency Services. Campers learned about preventing fires, home escape planning and the importance of having working smoke alarms. Some of the other activities included extricating a vehicle using the jaws of life, properly using fire hoses and extinguishers and executing a fire evacuation. At the end of the week, the junior firefighters competed in an exciting Combat Challenge that tested the skills and knowledge they learned throughout their camp experience. Caledon's Junior Firefighter Camp started in 2008 and the week-long programs are offered once in July and again in August. The second camp session runs from Aug. 12 to 16. For more information or to register for the camp, contact the Town of Caledon's Recreation Department at 905-584-2272, ext. 4235. |
