Hoping for a ‘Green wave’ across country

By Nancy Urekar
Dufferin-Caledon Green Party candidate
The great peace activist Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
This is what motivates me to the core.
What will you say when the climate crisis is a daily reality and your grandchildren ask, “You knew this was going to happen and you did nothing?”
I need to do something.
I am the Green Party Candidate for Dufferin-Caledon for the 2015 Federal election. My name is Nancy Urekar and I own ChicáBOOM Consignment – Furniture, Fashion and Decor in Caledon village. I've lived in the Orangeville-Caledon area since 1987, and raised my family here. I have a BA in sociology and an MBA from McMaster University. Before opening the recycling store, I was a financial advisor with Assante Capital Management and a vice-president at McLeod, Young, Weir.
What inspires me about the Green Party and our leader Elizabeth May is the influence we exert on other parties' policies. We become stronger as Canadians increasingly vote Green.
The Green Party has a clear plan for the country and the economy. For instance, we need to move from a fossil fuel-based economy to a greener more sustainable one. By investing in research to develop alternate energy sources, we can diversify our economy and create more jobs.
We need to pay down the debt so we aren't leaving a massive financial burden for future generations. We need to look after our people. No Canadian should live in poverty. We need pension reform, more affordable housing, expanded apprenticeship programs, more long-term care beds, more workplace childcare and reduced prescription drug prices.
These are issues worth voting for, and lots of people need to vote to make it happen. As May says, “If lots of people vote for what they want, lots of people will get what they want.”
That's why Greens have been elected provincially in New Brunswick, P.E.I. and British Columbia. In the 2011 federal election Greens came second in Dufferin-Caledon.
With your vote Oct. 19, we can be part of a Green wave from coast to coast to coast.
We have a plan. It's called Vision Green, and it's available on my website at www.electnancy.ca
You can also go there to ask for a sign, volunteer and donate.
If you want a Canada that is hopeful, inclusive, productive and compassionate, please join me for the sake of generations to come.
