Hawks end pre-season with win

By Jake Courtepatte
A strong showing by a team veteran led the Caledon Golden Hawks to a pre-season record of 1-1, defeating the league champion Alliston Hornets on the road last week.
Matt Magliozzi, who put up his first goal in a Golden Hawks uniform a week earlier, notched the first goal of the game just two minutes in.
But it was a natural hat trick from Daniel Cafagna that gave the Hawks a dominating lead, when last year's leading scorer for the team added three unanswered goals before the end of the period.
Alliston answered with three of their own in the middle frame, breaking the shutout just 13 seconds into the period. A late goal by newcomer Brett Barry in the dying seconds once again opened a two-goal lead heading to the third.
Neither side mounted much offence in the final 20 minutes, handing the Hawks their first win for the year by a score of 5-3.
Sam Procopio, between the pipes for a good portion of last regular season's success, turned away a whopping 45 shots for the victory.
Cafagna and Magliozzi led the offensive charge in pre-season action, each putting up three points over the two-game series. Magliozzi joins the Hawks after a brief stint with the Brampton Bombers of the Junior B Greater Ontario Hockey League last season.
A slow start prevented a comeback in the Hawks only other game of the pre-season, a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Hornets in late August.
Caledon opens the regular season at their home rink of Caledon East Arena next Friday (Sept. 18), hosting the Erin Shamrocks.
Puck drop is at 8:30 p.m.
