Hawks drop Brewers from playoffsBy Jake Courtepatte A blowout loss to the Newmarket Hawks in the final game of the Greater Toronto Baseball League regular season foreshadowed the Bolton Brewers' quick exit from the post-season. The squad was the first to be sent packing from this year's playoffs, in their first full season with the league. An 18-5 loss last Wednesday solidified Bolton's sixth-place finish in the seven-team AAA league, amassing a 7-18-0 record over the season. That set the stage for a best-of-three first round match-up with the Hawks, who they amassed a 1-3 record against this year. The series was almost over from the beginning, as Newmarket's Brad Crone sent his third home run of the year out of the park as part of a 17-run offensive effort. Daryl Bond was on the mound for the brunt of the abuse for the Brewers, despite limited pitching experience in the regular season. The lone spark for the Brewers came when Brendan Lyons put one over the fence, the first Brewers player this season to do so. The final score was 17-2. Game two was much of the same, with Crone finding the same success on the mound against the Brewers as he did the plate. He tossed a complete game, giving up just one hit and striking out 12, while Brewer ace Andrew White just couldn't match up. A final score of 12-2 sent the Brewers packing and propelled the Hawks into the final weekend of play. In winning the regular season pennant, the East York Bulldogs earned an automatic berth in this weekend's year-end championship tournament in Pickering. They will be joined by Newmarket, the winner of the Leaside Leafs and Martingrove Sox series, and the winner between the Pickering Red Sox and Thornhill Reds. As of press-time, the Red Sox lead that series 1-0. To continue following the post-season action, visit www.gtbl.ca |
