Golden Hawks soar to fifth in GMOHL with back-to-back wins

By Jake Courtepatte
Things have been looking up for the Caledon Golden Hawks lately, thanks to a healthy dose of offence mixed with some solid backstopping.
Goaltenders Sam Procopio and Brendan Macham combined for only one goal allowed through two games over the weekend, bringing the Hawks to six wins in their last seven games.
The line combination of Nicholas McNutt, Daniel Cafagna and Christian Mariconda continued their ongoing success last Thursday against the struggling Schomberg Cougars, combining for four goals and five assists in a 5-0 shutout on the road. Ryan Mouser rounded out the scoring for the Hawks.
Procopio was tested few and far between, but still made 18 stops for his second shutout in a row.
He was between the pipes again Sunday when the Hawks hosted the second-place Huntsville Otters at Caledon East. Almost perfect once again, the second-year goaltender's one falter came on the power play late in the second period.
After the Hawks scored their fifth of the game in the final minutes of the second, Macham came in to relieve Procopio of his duties. Macham finished up strong by stopping all 12 shots he faced in the 5-1 win.
Scoring for the Hawks were Randy Chen, Kevin Pleasance, Cafagna and Mariconda with two.
Following a seven-goal collapse against the Penetang Kings earlier this month, Procopio has now allowed only one goal through his last three starts. He and Macham have combined to form quite the tandem this season, putting up very similar numbers while both ranking in the top seven goalies in the league in terms of both save-percentage and goals-against.
Since the start of October, the Hawks have been one of the hottest teams in the GMOHL. They dug themselves a hole by starting off the season at 0-7, but since then have climbed out with an 11-3-2 record to sit in fifth place in the nine-team league.
One of those wins came against the powerhouse Alliston Hornets, one of only two regulation losses they've allowed all season. Caledon will try to make that number three when they meet them at New Tecumseth Rec Centre tomorrow (Friday).
The weekly Sunday match up will feature the Hawks against the Midland Flyers (12-9-1) at Caledon East at 7 p.m.
If they can continue the pace they've been setting, this Cinderella team could rank as high as third by the end of the weekend.
