Golden Hawks ride huge third period to fourth win in five games

By Jake Courtepatte
The Junior C Caledon Golden Hawks have been perhaps the most inconsistent team in the GMOHL this season, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
They entered last week riding high on a three-game winning streak, in which they seemed to have finally put their scoring demons behind them with a 16-goal burst of offence.
Heading into Midland Friday night, it seemed like an opportunity to tack on some points against the last-place Flyers.
Midland had other plans, however, going up 2-0 before the midway point of the first period.
Hawk goaltender James Cyfko was certainly not to blame, stopping 17 shots in the period while Caledon could only muster up nine.
After a scoreless second period, Midland put the game away with a third goal in the final few minutes for just their first shutout of the season.
It was also Caledon's first time being shutout since game four of the first round of GMOHL playoffs last year, when they were kept scoreless by the team they hosted Sunday; the Schomberg Cougars.
The Hawks once again let the opponents get the upper-hand first, when Schomberg's Nathan Sinclair opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game.
But Caledon came storming back, as only a few minutes later Christian Mariconda netted his ninth point in five games.
The luck continued to go Caledon's way, as a bouncing puck ended up on the stick of Ben Ardis at the top of the crease, and he banged it in for the 2-1 Hawks' lead.
With Lucas Mizzi in the box for slashing near the end of the frame, the Schomberg powerplay went to work, sliding the puck between the legs of a screened Sam Procopio to tie the game.
The second period was a barrage of offence from the Hawks, putting 24 shots on net. Other chances were not tallied on the score sheet, like a wicked wrist shot from Derek Czech three minutes in that rang off the crossbar.
Schomberg got into penalty troubles throughout the period, but capitalized shorthanded early on a failed dumped puck from the Caledon end.
However, the Hawks made no mistake on an extended five-on-three, when a Jake Mottershaw shot from the point produced a rebound right to Mariconda, tying the game at three after two periods.
The defining moment of the match came in the third period, on an innocent-looking dump-in from the blue line by Ryan Mouser.
Flipped into the air, the puck somehow fooled Cougar goaltender Taylor Ewart, rolling down his back and into the net for the go-ahead goal.
It seemed to take the wind out of the Schomberg sails, as the Hawks scored three more goals in the period for a final tally of 7-4 for Caledon.
Christian Bonaldi had a goal and three assists, cementing his position as the team's top scorer. He now has 26 points through 21 games.
After a consistent two-games-per-week schedule for most of the season, the Hawks only game this week comes on the road in Huntsville Sunday to take on the Otters.
They will be watching the tight-knit standings shift from the sidelines for much of the next two weeks, as they will then take another week off before hosting the Otters at home.
