Golden Hawks gain points after double-win weekendBy Brian Lockhart Weekends don't get much better than the one the Caledon Golden Hawks just had. Winning both weekend games gave the squad four more points for the season and two important wins with the playoffs looming just a few weeks away. The first game Friday (Jan. 10), saw the squad in Alliston where they delivered a 3-0 slam-dunk shut-out to the second place Hornets. The Hawks' defence kept the normally aggressive Hornets away from the net and prevented them from scoring. The Caledon squad notched a single goal in each period to take the win. Caledon goals came from Daniel Cafagna in the first, Steven Klomp in the second, and a final third period goal from Steve Zeppieri. The return to home ice for their regular Sunday (Jan. 12) night game had the Hawks hosting the Huntsville Otters. They didn't waste any time in lighting up the board when Cafagna scored the first Caledon goal with just :13 seconds gone on the clock. Cafagna ruled the first period when he scored three more before the frame ended, including a short-handed effort that gave the Hawks a four-goal lead going into the second. The first assist went to Cody Forgione. Klomp got the assists for goals two and four, and Brett Bloor had the assist on the second goal. While players have scored four goals in a game during Junior C action before, notching four in a single period is pretty much a superman effort — even for Cafagna, a player who is leading the Hawks in points and goals. The second frame saw the Caledon squad let up on the pressure and they paid for it when Huntsville scored two unanswered goals. Huntsville challenged in the third to make it a 4-3 game at just two and a-half minutes in. But the Hawks, who struggled with third period results early in the season, turned it up and notch and scored three to end the game and take the 7-3 win. Caledon goals came from Christian Bonaldi, Klomp and Chris Smith. “We had a quick start,” Cafagna said after Sunday's game. “We let off a bit in the second, but in the third we came back and gave it to them. We had a good lead but I don't think we stuck to our game plan (in the second period). At the intermission we figured ourselves out. In the third we gave up a goal. We tried staying disciplined and started taking more shots because we seemed to be scoring.” The wins leave the Golden Hawks in fourth place; a spot they've been holding on to for most of the season, with 43 points and a 19-15 record. The Golden Hawks will be in Schomberg tonight (Thursday) to take on the Cougars. They return to home ice at Caledon East for their regular Sunday night game, hosting the Midland Flyers. Game time is 7 p.m.  Caledon Golden Hawk defenceman Zack Worth held back a player in front of the Caledon net during the second period of Sunday's game against the Huntsville Otters. The Golden Hawks collected their second win of the weekend, leaving the ice after dispatching the visitors 7-3. |
