A quarter of a second, if that, could have made all the difference in Sunday night's game between the Caledon Golden Hawks and the Stayner Siskins.
The game was tied at three — a pass went across the net and a Caledon player took the shot that went into the net, but the buzzer sounded to end the game as the puck was in the air and the ref waved off the goal.
It was the right call for sure, but the split second between the time the puck was launched and the clock ran out cost the Caledon squad the game when the teams had to return for an overtime period.
With no scoring in overtime, the teams had to settle the game with a shoot-out.
The Siskins won the shoot-out 2-1 to leave with the win.
The Hawks tied the game in the third period after trailing 3-2 to start the frame.
“I think overall, they (Stayner) shouldn't even have two of those goals because of turn-overs,” said Hawk forward Steven Klomp. “Right here on our blue line, the defence giving it right to their guy coming in. That was our mistake for sure.”
The squad battled hard in the third, but those two goals had done the damage.
“I think we came out stronger in the first period for sure, but sort of went down as the game went on,” Klomp said. “If we played out systems properly and made simple plays we could have come out with a ‘W'.”
The squad has been playing a disciplined game lately and spent little time in the penalty box Sunday.
“We made a new rule up — you can't talk back to the ref or anything like that or you have to sit the rest of the game.”
The loss to Stayner came two days after another loss when the Hawks were shut-out 4-0 by the Alliston Hornets on Hornets' home ice.
In that outing, the Caledon squad appeared flat for the entire game.
“We couldn't break out of our zone,” Klomp said. “We weren't playing our systems properly — it was just one of those games; just one of those bad games.”
After the weekend, the Hawks maintain their fourth place position in the GMOHL standings.
They will return to home ice at the Caledon East arena this Sunday (Nov. 10), to host the Huntsville Otters.
The puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
