Fun, entertainment and learning at Caledon Fair

By Bill Rea
It promises to be an educational and entertaining weekend at the Caledon Fairgrounds.
The Caledon Agricultural Society has a full weekend planned for the 157th edition of the Caledon Fair.
Things will start up tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, as the grounds on the east side of Highway 10 (just south of Caledon Village Place) open at 4 p.m. The Fair will run until the grounds close at 6 p.m. Sunday. And there will be plenty of great attractions the whole weekend, including entertainment.
“We've got a lot of new entertainment,” commented Betty Brander, one of the directors of the Fair. “It's really, really good entertainment.”
The Campbells Amusements Midway opens at 4 p.m. Friday, and the popular Bavarian Gardens will get going at 5.
A big attraction that evening will be the Ontario Truck and Tractor Pulling Association (OTTPA) Truck and Tractor Pull, which is scheduled to get started at 7 p.m.
Entertainment that evening will include the Dufferin County Line Band, returning by popular demand at 8 p.m.
Saturday will see the grounds open at 7 a.m., and the English Horse Show for beginners will get started at 9.
Returning this year will be the British Classic Car Show, which will start at 10.
“It was a big hit,” Brander recalled.
Also at 10 a.m., the Midway is due to open, complete with pony rides, and the Agricultural Awareness Tent will open too.
The Fair Parade is due to enter the grounds at 11:30 a.m. The Caledon Concert Band performed at last year's Fair, and Brander said the response from the public was so great that they are coming back. They're scheduled to start playing at 11:30.
The opening ceremonies are due to start at noon, and that will be followed by an auction of baked goods, with proceeds going to Bethell Hospice and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
There will also be lots of entertainment, including Cindy Cook from the Polka-Dot Door, who will be performing at 1 and 2 p.m. The Golden Country Classics will be making their regular appearance too, starting at 1:30 p.m.
For those who want to see more tractors in action, the Lawn and Garden Tractor Pull is slated to get going at 2 p.m.
Brander said there will be a Beef Barbecue running from 4 to 7 p.m.
Entertainment late in the afternoon will include the country music of the Sarah Wickett Band, which will perform from 4 to 7 p.m., with the Dufferin County Line Band returning to the stage at 8.
There will be a full day of activities Sunday, starting with Welsh and Sport Pony Show at 9 a.m. Brander said this is a crucial event, because it's a qualifier for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
The Cattle Show is set to get started at 11 a.m.
Entertainment for the afternoon will include country and western singer Brett Baker.
The Kiddie Pedal Pull is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., as is the Open Driving Show.
Brander said the theme of this year's Fair ins Tractors and Tiaras — Women in Agriculture.
