Free activities coming up for Seniors Month

By Zachary Roman

June is a month to celebrate Seniors.

Each year, Ontario recognizes June as Seniors Month, “a time to recognize the hard work seniors have done all their lives to make Ontario into the great place it is today.”

The Town of Caledon's age-friendly division and various community partners have free activities planned for the rest of the month to mark the occasion.

If you're reading this paper the morning it came out, June 15, then there's still time to make it to the Strawberry Social at Rotary Place in Bolton (7 Rotary Way). It's taking place from 2 to 4 p.m. and there will be homemade cake with strawberries and cream, as well as coffee, tea and entertainment. To see if there's any spaces left and register for the event, call the Caledon Seniors Centre at 905-951-6114.

On June 20, Caledon Meals on Wheels is partnering with Age-Friendly Caledon to host an afternoon bingo bash. It's being held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Caledon East Community Complex (6215 Old Church Road) and there will be light refreshments and giveaways. For more information about this event and to register for it, call 905-857-7651.

Another day of fun is planned for June 22 at the Inglewood Community Centre (15825 McLaughlin Road). From 1 to 3 p.m. there will be games, raffle prizes and refreshments provided by Door to Door & More Inc. and Age-Friendly Caledon. To register for this event, go online to caledon.ca/adult55. For assistance registering, call 311.

Closing out the month with a splash of colour is the watercolour painting workshop being held by the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives on June 27. From 2 to 4 p.m. at the Caledon East Community Complex, seniors will get to create a painting using a variety of watercolour painting techniques. No previous art experience is required and all materials will be provided. Registering for this event can also be done online at caledon.ca/adult55 and assistance registering can be received by calling 311.

One of the events that's already happened this month is the Eat Local Caledon Community Lunch, hosted by ecoCaledon and the Palgrave United Community Kitchen (PUCK). It took place from 12 to 2 p.m. on June 7 in Palgrave.

Guests enjoyed a healthy lunch with seasonal ingredients from local suppliers. There was asparagus salad and rhubarb cake from Mount Wolfe Farm, and pesto pasta and chickpea salads from the Albion Hills Community Farm.

Guests also enjoyed fair trade organic coffee and tea, and were entered into a draw for a cookbook and soup from local business Soup Girl.

There was a great turnout for the event, and PUCK thanked the local farms and volunteers who made it possible. PUCK also thanked the Town of Caledon and ecoCaledon for their support.
