Fall Seatbelt Campaign has started


Caledon OPP is taking part in a Provincial traffic safety initiative focusing on seatbelts which started yesterday (Wednesday).
Police have issued the reminder that all drivers and passengers should be properly restrained within a vehicle, regardless of how short the trip is. Drivers are responsible for ensuring all passengers younger than 16 years of age are using a seatbelt or child safety seat properly.
The following seatbelt related charges can be found under the Highway Traffic Act:
• Driving with a seatbelt removed, inoperative or modified — $240 fine.
• Driver failing to properly a wear seatbelt — $240 fine and two demerit points.
• Passenger failing to occupy position with a seatbelt — $240 fine.
• Passenger failing to properly wear a seatbelt — $240 fine.
• Driving while a passenger under 16 who fails to occupy position with a seatbelt — $240 fine and two demerit points.
• Driving while a passenger under 16 who fails to properly wear a seatbelt — $240 fine and two demerit points.
• Driving while a child passenger is not properly secured — $240 fine.
During this initiative, officers will also be looking for other types of driving behaviour, including distracted driving, drinking and driving, speeding, in addition to seatbelt compliance.
