Experience Wines of the WorldBy Bill Rea “Wine is bottled poetry.” Robert Louis Stevenson There are many occasions that wine can make, and other times when wine is the occasion. That will be the case June 25, when the Rotary Club of Palgrave hosts the 19th edition of its Wines of the World. It will start at 6 p.m., and once again, it will be at the Caledon Pan Am Equestrian Park in Palgrave. Club President Jim Firth said it started out as a fundraising garage sale. “It kind of morphed into Wines of the World,” he observed. The popularity of the event has become a constant. There were close to 1,000 people on hand for last year's event, and the Rotarians are hoping this year's numbers will be comparable. The wine selection this year was developed with significant assistance from Kimberly Day, wine connoisseur and manager at the Caledon East LCBO. The Club has made the effort to showcase new products, since they expect many patrons from previous years to return. Firth said there will be 52 varieties of wine at the event, along with products from local craft breweries, and ciders as well. In addition, he said The Event Team will be arranging and catering a wide variety of food. The proceeds from Wines of the World will be used to support projects in which the Rotary Club is involved, both locally and around the world. Local beneficiaries of the Rotarians' support have included Peace Ranch, Caledon Meals on Wheels, Caledon Parent-Child Centre, Camp Enterprise, the Robotics program at Humberview Secondary School, scholarship programs and Bethell Hospice. The title sponsors for this year's Wines of the World are Policaro BMW and Scotiabank in Bolton. Platinum sponsors are RA-Tech Electrical Services and Sandra Tomona — the Investors Group. Gold sponsors are Terra Firma Brands, Anytime Fitness, Motor Home Travel, State Farm — J.H. Glenn Insurance and Financial Services, Migrations Travel and Cruises Ltd., Cavalier Transportation Services Inc., BDO, Remax-Maria Britto, MEI International Academy, Alterna Savings, Colio Estate Wines, Caledon Estates Banquet Halls, Elizabeth Rustja and Elaine White — Prudential and Jiffy Lube Wine donors are Trialto and Downey's Estate Winery. Tickets are $50 each. They can be purchased online at www.rotarywow.com, from any Palgrave Rotarian or at Migrations Travel and Palgrave Café in Palgrave; Scotiabank, Jiffy Lube, Naked Vine and Foresters Book Garden in Bolton; Howard the Butcher in Caledon East; and Scotiabank in Orangeville. Firth was also pleased that the event will be taking place again at the Equestrian Park. “It's really a fantastic facility,” he declared. |
