Editorial — Earth Hour worth marking

Earth Hour comes this Saturday (March 25), and it will be marked in many places around the world, including Palgrave United Church.
Billed as the world's largest collective environmental action, it calls on people to shut off their lights to highlight such concerns as climate action and the environment.
The environment is, or should be, a very great concern for all of us, and we think it's a safe bet that there are many, many people in the world who realize it. In terms of environmental awareness and protection, things are a lot better than they were, say 20 years ago.
There are lots of people who preach the need to do something for the environment. Most political organizations hoping to attract votes make such proclamations, although one always has to wonder which ones are sincere in this.
And we must always bear in mind that trying to do right by the environment comes at a cost. There are those who charge the current high prices we pay for electricity in our homes is the result of attempts to protect the environment. No matter how well-meaning the efforts are, there are some among us who are suffering greatly as a result.
The balance here is important. The environment must be protected, but those who live in this environment must be taken care of too.
No one ever said these issues are easy to resolve, but they must be on the agenda.
Something to keep in mind during Earth Hour.
