Editorial — Don’t forget to celebrate Canada MondayMonday is July 1, meaning it's Canada Day. It's the main day of the year to celebrate the remarkable institution that is this country. This is a land in which some of us were fortunate enough to be born, largely because we had ancestors who had the foresight to settle here. Others of us chose this place. Well, no matter how we got here, there are very few of us who are inclined to leave. Is this country of ours perfect? By no means. Canada is essentially a work in progress, as millions of people spread across a vast land mass, try and collectively figure out how to make it all work. We have problems, like historic cultural differences, problems with government, coming to grips with the fact that once again the Stanley Cup resides south of the border, etc. We also have internal political squabbles that seem to pale into silliness when we reflect that Nature sometimes causes grief, as our fellow Canadian in Calgary have learned the hard way lately. This country has not solved all its issues, and it's possible we'll never see them dealt with completely. But it's obvious to all that the vast majority of Canadians are ready to keep trying, and they do have a lot to work with. Like we stated above, not many want to leave. So make sure you get out and have a good time Monday. You have a lot to celebrate. |
