Don Olson Classic honours running coach and long-time Bolton resident

Don Olson had been in a race to stay ahead of cancer for a little more than two years.
A fixture around town, Mr. Olson always had a smile and a helping hand for everyone. Even after his diagnosis, he continued to live his life to the fullest.
As a tribute to their coach and their friend, 310 Running has renamed its fall cross country race the Don Olson Classic.
A popular staple of the cross-country race circuit, offering a spectacular course through Albion Hills Conservation Area, the race is scheduled for this Saturday (Oct. 5). The event will feature a 5K run for all ages and abilities, as well as a 2.5K race for athletes 14 and under. The 2.5K race is a fixture race of the Minor Track Association circuit, attracting some great runners from across the province.
The Don Olson Classic is sponsored by Husky Injection Molding Systems and, at Mr. Olson's request, all proceeds will be directed to the Bethell Hospice Foundation.
As a volunteer coach at 310 Running, Mr. Olson touched the lives of many young athletes, inspiring them to reach for their dreams. He loved to watch his athletes excel and improve, and photographing their accomplishments at meets and competitions was another of his passions.
Athletic himself his entire life, Mr. Olson was an avid golfer and a talented athlete, progressing through the years from marathons to triathlons, and finally to the gruelling Ironman triathlons. In all, he completed seven Ironman races — the final one last November in Panama City Beach, Florida, less than six months before his death. Always the optimist, Mr. Olson had signed up to do this year's event too.
Sharing knowledge both at work and in his personal life was a large part of who Mr. Olson was. Over his 24 year career at Husky, he worked first as a Manufacturing Technician in the Refurbishing Department, then as a Service Technician, and most recently as a Product Support Specialist. His love of teaching and passing along information made him a natural trainer at work, and an invaluable friend. Incredibly handy in so many areas, and especially with cars, Mr. Olson was always there – often cancelling his own plans to help out a friend. The familiar sight of him with his Tim Hortons Large Double/Double (which many friends teased was surgically attached to his hand) will be missed, as will his infectious laughter and huge heart.
