The Caledon Golden Hawks looked like a nicely-timed machine as they notched a 5-2 win over the visiting Orillia Terriers at the Caledon East arena Sunday.
It was a far cry from the home ice performance the previous week, when the Hawks blew a 6-2 lead to Penetang Kings and lost the game in overtime. That was a game that had the squad shaking their heads when the visitors scored early in OT to rob them of the win on their home ice.
The Hawks opened the scoring early in the first period in Sunday's game on a goal from Daniel Cafagna. He followed up with a second goal at the 8:11 mark.
Going into the second period, the Caledon squad was leading by three when Christian Bonaldi notched a short-handed goal just 27 seconds into the frame.
The Terriers lit up their side of the board on a power play 57 seconds later.
Caledon widened the gap when forward Justin Lollini collected two goals — one earlier in the period and one at 17:06 — to give the Hawks a four-goal advantage.
“All three periods, I felt we did our job,” Lollini said. “They really showed us what they were going to do and we picked up on it. They kept doing the same thing and from there were adjusted to it and took over.”
The squad learned a lesson from the Penetang game, Lollini added, observing they went into Sunday's game with different attitude.
“In the Penetang game, when we came back from the first period, we held back,” he commented. “Everyone was trying to score instead of playing regular hockey — our game. Tonight we stuck to the game plan and it worked out well.”
The Terriers notched a final goal with 40 seconds left in the second, but neither team scored in the final 20 minutes.
Defensively, the Hawks played a tight 60 minutes, forcing the Terriers to the outside and pulling their offence apart.
The Caledon squad is now in the number four spot in the Georgian Mid Ontario Hockey League with 12 points and a 5-3 record. One loss came in overtime and one loss came as the result of a shoot-out.
The Hawks will travel to Schomberg tonight (Thursday) to take on the Cougars.
They return to home ice Sunday, when they will again go up against Schomberg.
The puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
